STEVE MCCURRY
Steve McCurry was born on April 23, 1950. He grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania . Originally planning on studying cinematics and film making, Steve McCurry ended up gaining a degree in theatre arts. In 1974 he graduated from the College of Arts and Architecture at Penn State University. He took on a job working for a newspaper company for 2 years. McCurry then decided to travel to India, a trip that changed his life.
Steve McCurry's photography style mostly consists of wildlife, portrait, and landscape images. One of his most famous photographs is “Afghan Girl”. It was featured on National Geographic along with some of his other images. His photos are all beautiful images of the many countries including, Italy, Bhurma, China, Cuba, India, Japan, and the Philippines. The most popular of his photos have been taken in countries from the Middle East.
The main idea behind Steve McCurry's work is taking beautiful photos of topics that aren't so beautiful but need to be seen. He’s also taken images of wars, conflicts, ancient traditions, vanishing cultures and contemporary culture. Most of these images are of social and world issues in less fortunate countries. What McCurry is trying to “say” with these images is more of showing. He's trying to show what war does and how it takes a toll on people. He tries to convey what the people are feeling and showing their “essential soul” peeking out. He wants the audience to see the “Human connection” between everyone in the world.
Steve McCurry inspired my photography in a few ways. I learned that you can hide such a deep meaning or convey a message with just one photo. Your photos can mean a lot more than just being an image. He also inspired me to see the light in dark things. By taking such amazing pictures in places that war had just occurred in, he really showed me how you can bring out the good in all bad.
